New River Canoe & Kayak Trips

We have several canoe and kayak trips for your enjoyment on the New River.  We offer 5, 9, 11, or 15 mile day trips as well as many overnight trips.  For most of our trips we'll drive you up the road and you'll paddle back to our location.  We also have trips where we put you in here at Riverside Canoe and pick you up at a designated location in Virginia.

Trips paddling back to our location:

Trip duration times are dependent on water level & flow

5 mile (approximately 2 hour)  Put in at Plum Nearly Rd.

9 mile (approx. 4 hours) Put in at 221 State Park Access

11.5 miles (approx. 6 hours) Put in at Fulton Reeves Rd.

14 miles (approx. 8 hours)  Put in at J.E. Gentry Rd.

(some trips may require a low water bridge portage).

*There are times when we offer a trip putting in at the Wagoner Access of the New River State Park which is a 20 mile trip (approx. 10 - 11 hours and may require 2 low water bridge portages.

We recommend doing this trip over a 2 day period.

Trips starting at our location, paddling into Virginia:

9 mile (approx. 4 hours)  Put in here and paddle to the 93 bridge in Virginia for pick up.

11.5 mile trip (approx 6 - 7 hours).  Put in here and paddle to Cox's Chapel (also known as Bridal's Creek) in Virginia for pick up.  This trip requires a portage around a dam.

It is recommended that only experienced paddlers take this trip.

Note:  Often times you will hear us refer to trips as "up river" or "down river". This only refers to where we are putting you in (up the road, or put in here).  All trips follow the flow of the river.

Our canoes will accommodate two adults and up to two small children, depending on size For safety reasons we do not allow children under the age of 2 for canoeing or kayaking.

(There are times that we allow three adults in a canoe, but that would be depending on water level).

In our livery stock, we have Mad River canoes.

For kayaks, we have Perception & Old Town kayaks.

Our rentals include the boat, paddles, life jackets, and shuttle.

We recommend that everyone wear a life jacket.  NC law requires that there must be a life jacket for each person in each boat at all times.  Anyone under 12, must wear a life jacket at all times.

We strongly recommend that eveyone going on the river in canoes, kayaks, or tubes wear some kind of protective footwear.  Water shoes work best, but old sneakers will do.  We do not recommend sandals or flip flops.

We do not recommend taking keys, wallets, cell phones or other valuables on the river.  Normally, we ask that you lock your valuables and personal items in your car and leave the keys with us.

June, July, August and all holidays are very busy.  Although we welcome walk-ins, we strongly recommend reservations during the week. Reservations are required on week ends and holidays.
